Marcell Jensen is just 29 years old and was released at the end of his contract by Hamburg. The German international received bids from various clubs but decided to retire as he didn’t want to play for another club.
The German left back has played 45 times for Germany told the press that he wasn;t retiring because he was short on options but because of his emotional attachment to Hamburg SV. Jensen did not start out at Hamburg, infact he had brief stints with Borussia Monchengladbach and Bayern Munic before joining Hamburg in 2008. The player must have grown very fond of Hamburg. ‘I had a lot of good offers but carrying on is not an option,’ Jensen told reporters. ‘I’m fit, I can move on a free transfer and still earn good money – but in the last few years I’ve been emotionally connected to Hamburg. I don’t want to lie to another team when I won’t be behind it. I can’t kiss another badge.’
Jensen’s loyalty is admirable and rare in an era that has players playing for clubs basically for the money and fame.
