Guus Hiddink would still be questioning how his side threw away a two goal lead and allowed the United States of America to beat them in an international friendly in Amsterdam yesterday.
The Netherlands started the game on the front foot and in the 27th minute were put ahead by Klaas Jan Huntelaar who rose to meet Memphis Depay’s cross to make it 1-0 bit 5 minutes later, USA were back on level terms as Zardes knocked in a cross from deep by Johnson to make it 1-1. The Netherlands came flying out of the blocks in the second half and Guzan was on hand to keep Van Persie’s header out one minute after the restart. In the 49th minute however, Huntelaar’s header found the back of the net again and this time, Van Der Weil was the supplier and in the 53rd minute, Depay made it 3-1 as he deflected Huntelaar’s shot into the net. Netherlands continued to dominate the match until the 70th minute as Brooks rounded off a superb attacking move to give the Americans hope. Some poor defending by the Dutch following a corner allowed Williams to equalize in the 89th minute. Luke De Jong could have won the game but his shot hit the post in the 90th minute and the Netherlands paid dearly as Wood tapped the ball into the net after Jordan Morris squared the ball into him in the box.
The Netherlands would be hoping for better performances when they resume their Euro qualifiers this month.
