John Obi Mikel is reportedly contemplating a move away from Stamford Bridge in search for more playing time as his role at the London club has been reduced drastically over the last 12 months.
Mikel has seen himself fall almost to a reserve role at Chelsea as he made only six starts last season. Nemanja Matic and Cesc Fabregas have been able to nail down permanent places in the starting 11 over the course of the last 11 months and when Chelsea have gone defensive, Kourt Zouma has been preferred in midfield to the former Lyn Oslo man. With Ramirez also providing competition and the emergence of the very talented Ruben Loftus-Cheek, the battle for starting positions in the midfield are already tougher. The imminent arrival of another midfield player in either Alex Song, Axel Witsel or Paul Pogba means someone has to give way and Mikel increasingly looks like the disposable player.
Mikel is not short on options as Fenerbache are reportedly interested in the super eagles star and Besikats are also offering the 29 year old a reunion with former teammate, Demba Ba. UAE side, Al Ain are also keen on Mikel as Asamoah Gyan has been very vocal about a possible move for Mikel. A few clubs in the MLS are also looking to snap up the Nigerian midfielder who is believed to be desperately in search of a club that would offer playing time. Mikel would very much like to stay in Europe and compete in the UEFA champions league but his current stock is such that he might not be able to attract top clubs.
Mikel might stay and fight for a jersey but he runs the risk of not being able to attract a very good club next season and would be best served leaving the club now.
