The former governor was charged for allegedly siphoning about N19.2bn from the Bayelsa treasury using three companies. According to the EFCC the fraud was committed between 2009 and 2012 when he was the state governor.
Sylva, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, (APC), was a member of the transition committee of President Muhammadu Buhari. It will be recalled that Festus Keyamo, withdrew as a prosecuting counsel in a corruption case between the Federal government and former Governor Timipre Sylva of Bayelsa State citing personal reasons.
However, the Director of Pulic Prosecution, DPP, Mr. M.S Diri, had earlier withdrawn another six-count charge preferred against Sylva where he was accused of involvement in the illegal diversion of N6.5billion from Bayelsa State.
