An Indian politician who claimed to have obtained a law degree has been arrested on suspicion of forgery.
Jitendra Tomar, law minister at state level for the territory of Delhi, allegedly never obtained the degree he listed on his nomination for local elections in February.
His Aam Aadmi anti-corruption campaign party (AAP) won a landslide in the Delhi polls, beating the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) that ruled at the federal level.
“The arrest is illegal, the matter is in court. What was the need to arrest him?’’ Delhi Deputy Chief Minister, Manish Sisodia, told newsmen.
Police chief has said the move was “within the parameters of law.”
Investigators had gone to the eastern state of Bihar to check Tomar’s law degree and found it to be fake,’’ a police source told local media.
