Crystal Palace would be wondering how they ended up without at least a point following their premier league clash with Manchester United at the Selhurst Park earlier today. Despite Palace dominating the game, Juan Mata and Maroane Fellaini both got on the score sheet to take Manchester United one step closer to a top four finish.
Manchester United started brighter than Crystal palace and Ashley Young was a constant threat down the left for Manchester United and when Dann stooped to block his attempted cross in the 18th minute, the referee, Michael Oliver pointed to the spot for a handball by Dann. Juan Mata stepped up to give Manchester United the lead from the spot. From that point, Crystal Palace took control of the game but failed to create good openings throughout the first half. Crystal Palace continued their dominance through Bolasie and Zaha in the second half and finally got their equalizer through Jason Puncheon whose freekick flew into the corner after Smalling had committed a foul in the 57th minute. Crystal Palace threatened to take the lead, controlling possession and fashioning out chances. The brilliance of De Gea was the only reason Manchester United stayed in the game and in the 78th minute, against the run of play Manchester United took the lead via Fellaini who rose to meet Ashley Young’s cross, nodding the ball into an empty net after the goalkeeper failed to meet the cross. Manchester United held on to secure their first premier league wins in four rounds of matches.
Manchester United’s victory over Crystal Palace now puts them 7 points ahead of Liverpool meaning that if Liverpool should lose to Chelsea tomorrow, the top four teams would be sure as Liverpool would have no mathematical chance of finishing in the top four.
