Less than a year ago, Argentine, Jonas Gutierez was diagnosed with testicular cancer and many feared that his playing days may be over. The Newcastle midfielder however showed great spirit to return to the game and earlier today, became a hero as his strike ensured that Newcastle United would be playing in the Barclays Premier League next season.
Jonas Gutierez could not start the season with Newcastle as he had to be flown to Argentina where he began chemotherapy to treat testicular cancer and the player admitted that he feared his best days were behind him. But the support and the prayers of the Newcastle fans and his teammates were enough to drive him back to his feet and in February, against Manchester United he made his return to the pitch. His performances, though spirited haven’t been excellent until today, when Newcastle needed a win to avoid the risk of Relegation. Sissoko had put them ahead but with West Ham threatening to equalize and put Newcastle’s season in, Jonas steeped up with an emphatic strike which was deflected into the net.
His comeback is not complete but Jonas has shown us that you can come back from even the biggest setbacks and put your name down in history, if you are dedicated.
