Real Madrid were made to bite their nails by a resilient Shalke 04 side who beat the reigning European champions at the Bernabeau 4-3 but were unable to secure an aggregate victory, ensuring that Real Madrid managed to qualify for the next round.
Shalke started the match with plenty attacking intent and finally took the lead in the 20 minute through Fuchs who received the ball inside the Madrid area after some good build up play. The German lashed the ball into the net despite Casillas getting a touch. Real Madrid equalized aginst the run of Play through Cristiano Ronaldo in the 25th minute as some clever movement allowed the former Manchester United forward nod in the ball to make it 1-1. An error by Casillas who punched the ball back into play after Real Madrid failed to clear their lines allowed Huntelaar to knock the ball into an empty net to make it 2-1. Shalke’s lead only lasted five minutes again as Ronaldo was on hand to meet Coentrao’s cross and nod the ball into an empty net after the Shalke goalkeeper misjudged the flight of the ball. Real Madird started the second half better and took the lead in the 52nd minute as Benzema showed composure to go round the goalkeeper and two defenders befor finishing the ball in style. Shalke started to dominate from that point on and were rewarded in the 57th minute as Sane curled an unstoppable shot past Casillas from 25 yards to make it 3-3. Shalke continued to ask questions of the Madrid defense and Luka Modric’s tackle in midfield released Huntelaar who, one-on-one with Casillas put the ball in the net off the underside of the bar in the 87th minute.
