Andrea Pirlo is a veteran of Italian and European football, having won numerous Serie A titles and two UEFA Champions League trophies. After seeing his penalty saved in the Champions league final in 2005 against Liverpool after his side capitulated and gave away a 3-0 lead and eventually lost on penalties, Pirlo admitted that he contemplated quitting football.
Pirlo has gone on to become one of the most decorated footballers in Italian football history but there was a time when the Juventus midfield maestro thought he was done. “The day I leave football is far away,” he told Tuttosport . “But once the idea of quitting crossed my mind. It was after the defeat of AC Milan in the Champions League final with Liverpool in Istanbul. For some days I really thought it was over. I had no strength left.” Pirlo did not quit and went on to win the World cup the following year with Italy and he got his revenge against Liverpool in 2007 as his AC Milan side beat the English club in the Champions league final. Pirlo left Milan for Juventus in 2011 and has won 3 serie A titles with Juventus and doesn’t look like stopping now.
Pirlo and Juventus are currently on board for a fourth straight Scuidetto as they lead the league.
