Chelsea would be disappointed that they could not bounce back from their crash out of the champions league at the midweek as they could only manage a draw at Stamford Bridge against Southampton.
Southampton started the match on the front foot as Mane put a lot of pressure on Matic and the Chelsea defense. Chelsea however came through the pressure and took the lead in the 11th minute as Ivanovic floated in a beautiful cross into the Southampton box and Costa was in hand to nod the ball in past a helpless Forster to score his 18th Premier league goal of the season and end his premier league goal drought and make it 1-0 to Chelsea. Chelsea’s lead did not last long as in the 19th minute, Mane was brought down in the penalty area by Matic and Tadic stepped up and converted the resulting penalty despite Courtois’ legs touching the ball slightly. Southampton finished the half strongly but were unable to find the net. Chelsea dominated the second half and some brilliant saves from Forster who was helped by the bar and post on two occasions ensured that Southampton held on to ensure that they did not lose to Chelsea this season, securing two draws.
Chelsea would be relieved that their lead at the top of the table was extended to six points as Manchester City lost to Burnley yesterday. Chelsea still have an outstanding match and could extend their lead at the top to nine points if they pick up a win
