Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu and his predecessor Sandro Rossell are being prosecuted over the deal that brought Brazilian wonderkid Neymar to the club.
Prosecutors claim the deal was “at least 83,371,000 euros” and not the 57 million initially reported by Barcelona, and are charging both presidents with tax fraud, with Rossell also accused of accounting irregularities.
The prosecutors are seeking a prison sentence of two years and three months for Bartomeu, seven years for Rossell, and a fine of 22.2 million euros against the club.
Neymar’s father, who doubles as his manager, however disagreed, saying the deal was entirely legal.
“I am convinced the people involved in this process proceeded at all times respecting the laws of Brazil and Spain while also respecting statutes of FIFA,” Neymar da Silva Santos said in a statement.
