Atletico Madrid picked up a 1-0 win on the night and were dragged all the way to a penalty shootout before they were able to knock out Bayer Leverkusen from the UEFA Champions League.
Atletico Madrid had been defeated 1-0 in Germany and the Spanish champions came out flying from the traps but Leverkusen were ready to match the physical Atletico side stride for stride. Atletico Madrid continued to create chances and were finally rewarded in the 27th minute as Mario Suarez was fed the ball after it had been nodded out of the Leverkusen penalty area. Suarez shot deflected off Toprak and crept past Leno in the Bayer Leverkusen goal to make it 1-0. Atletico continued to control the game throughout the first and second half but Leverkusen were excellent in defence and even managed to create a few chances of their own. Atletico Madrid totally dominated the game in extra time but they were unable to create a clear cut chance and the game went to penalties. Toprak and Kiesling’s misse were two of the three that sent Atletico through as they won the penalty shootout 3-2.
Atletico would be proud of what they have achieved in the Champions league so far after a shaky start to the tournament for last season’s finalists.
