A 2-0 win on the night for Arsenal was not enough as the North London club were sent packing from the UEFA Champions league as they lost on away goals after the tie finished 3-3 on aggregate.
Arsenal were clearly the better team on the night and should have been in front much earlier in the first half but failed to convert their chances as Koscielny hit the post from four yards out and Welbeck continued to prod and look for spaces behind the Monaco defense as Monaco sat deep. Arsenal finally took the lead in the 33rd minute through Olivier Giroud who was played through by Ozil, had his initial shot blocked by Subasic but the Frenchman reacted fastest to send the rebound home to make it 1-0 on the night. Arsenal continued to dominate in the second half and forced Monaco deeper into their half and Ozil and Cazorla continued to lead the charge for Arsenal, Arsenal got their reward in the 79th minute as Walcott’s shot came off the post a Layvin Kurzawa gifted Ramsey the ball and the Welshman slid the ball into the corner of the net to make it 2-0. Monaco held on to survive an Arsenal barrage and Qualify thanks to their 3 away goals in their 3-1 win in the first leg.
This makes it the fifth straight season that Arsenal have been knocked out in the second round of the UEFA champions league and the fourth straight season that they needed just one goal to qualify but failed to get it.
