Manchester United had to dig deep to produce a victory against Preston North end at deep dale as goals from Herrera, Fellaini and Rooney helped the premier league giants advance to the quarterfinals of the FA Cup.
After a boring first half in which both teams struggled to create chances and fouling was the order of the day, Preston took the lead two minutes into the second half as Laird broke with his teammates into the Manchester United box before unleashing a shot that was deflected in off Valencia. Manchester United switched up a gear and were back on level terms in the 65th minute as Herrera received Young’s low cross and knocked the ball in off the post. Manchester United continued to pile up the pressure and in the 72nd minutes, Fellaini fired the ball home from inside the 6 yard box after his original header was saved by the Preston Goalkeeper. Rooney broke free in the 88th minute, contentiously going down after the goalkeeper’s challenge in the box to win a penalty which he converted, firing the ball into the top right of the goal to make it 3-1.
Manchester United have set up a quarter final date with premier league rivals Arsenal at Old Trafford.
