The All Progressives Congress (APC) marked Valentine’s Day with anevent to celebrate its presidential nominee, General Muhammad Buhari with the ‘Love Buhari, Love Nigeria’ Valentine’s Day dinner at Intercontinental Hotel in Victoria Island, Lagos. The event was presented by Alhaji Nasiru Danu, the chief architect and sponsor of the evening.
The event was hosted by Governor Babatunde Fashola, and held on Valentine’s Day as a show of solidarity as Nigeria accepted the postponement of the elections until the 28th of March. Several notable members of the public, celebrities and political figures were present to show their support including: Nasir El Rufai, Kaffy, Dele Momodu, General Buhari’s daughters, Halima Sherrif and Safina Buhari, Pat Utomi, Dayo Adeneye, Kenny Saint Brown, Omowunmi Akinnifesi, Nike Osinowo and Lanre Da Silva Ajayi.
The MCs of the evening, radio and television personality Oreka Godis and comedian Julius Agwu, were also there to keep the dinner guests entertained as the event Fashola, in his usual forthright and engaging manner, spoke about why he supported the Buhari/Osinbajo ticket during his opening address. “A good country works according to plan,” he told the audience. “And a good leader exercises good moral authority. This is an important feature missing in Nigeria’s governance.” He also recognised that this period marked a turning point in Nigeria’s democracy and noted the ramifications for the country were, stating: “This is the first time that we have the opportunity to change a government we don’t like.” He also made clear that performance was the key index for any administration.
Speeches from the presidential nominee’s daughters were a highlight of the evening, giving an insight to Buhari as a father. Halima Sherrif said of her father, “I once asked
dad why he didn’t just give up the quest. He replied, ‘You never give up on important things dear to your heart.’”
El Rufai also spoke about the presidential nominee saying in a simple but powerful statement, “General Buhari is perhaps the most patriotic Nigerian that I know.”
Senator Adeleke Mamora also took to the stage to speak. “Nigeria will undergo rebirth, rebuilding and restoration under General Buhari,” he said. “They may postpone the election, but can never postpone our victory.”
The event also included entertainment from artists from the Mavin Label and Kenny Saint Brown.
