Because It’s Happy: English Farmers Create Onions That Won’t Make You Cry!

share on:

Tired of crying when cutting your onions? A group of farmers from Bedfordshire, England have got you covered!

The farmers have created a new variety of onions called the Sweet Red.

The Sweet Red was bred to contain less sulphur, which is the reason we cry when we chop onions, and also the cause of bad breath.

Farmer Alastair Findlay of Bedfordshire Growers spent almost 20 years perfecting it, personally tasting and evaluating some 400-500 bulbs per season to cultivate the new sweet red onion.

The onions have gone on sale in U.K. supermarket chain Asda, which bought 40 tons of the new variety for its stores.
