Liverpool’s marquee summer signing, Mario Balotelli, may finally be coming good as his late strike was enough to secure a 1-0 win for Liverpool against Besiktas in the first leg of their Europa league tie.
Liverpool were without Gerrard, as the captain was injured, but controlled the game for long periods though unable to find a breakthrough. Liverpool were guilty of creating only a few chances and their finishing was probably of the poorest quality, with Adam Lallana emphasizing that at the start of the second half when the England international missed a sitter. Besiktas looked to have secured a draw but when Ibe was brought down in the 85th minute, Balotelli who came on as a substitute in the 60th minute was on hand to convert the penalty, hereby earning Liverpool the win.
Liverpool will now take a slim advantage to Besiktas knowing that they have to be at their best defensively to win the tie.
