The Peoples Democratic Party suffered a major loss in the House of Representatives when on Wednesday when 8 of its members defected from the party to other parties. This turn of events gave its rivals, the All Progressives Congress position as the majority party.
Four of those defectors joined the rival All Progressives Congress bringing the party’s numbers to to 179 members as opposed to PDP’s 162 members. The remaining parties have 19 members altogether.
The All Progressives Grand Alliance gained two of the defectors, while the Peoples Democratic Movement and the Social Democratic Party each gained one, bringing to eight the total PDP defectors on Wednesday.
All the defected legislators either cited dissatisfaction with the conduct of the party’s last primaries or divisions in its fold as reasons for their decision to abandon the PDP.
Also with the defection, both the chairman of the House committee on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Zakari Mohammed, and his deputy are now members of the APC.
