English singer, songwriter, composer, pianist, record producer, and occasional actor, Sir Elton John, on sunday morning got married to his lover David Furnish nine years after they entered into a civil partnership. The 5 time Grammy award winner tied the knots yesterday morning in a romantic ceremony in front of family, friends, numerous celebrities and of course, their sons Zachary, three and Elijah, 23 months.
The couple was so happy and so eager for the whole world to share in their happiness they posted pictures to their Instagram pages throughout the ceremony alongside the hashtag #sharethelove. The couple looked dapper as they dressed in matching dark suits, as were their sons, and Elton wore a pair of sunglasses as he and David said their vows.
They entered a civil partnership on December 21, 2005 and and picked the poignant date to officially get wed on their ninth anniversary. Same sex marriages became legal in England in March and to celebrate, Elton and David set about planning the lavish bash. The couple also posted a sweet snap of them together after signing the official paperwork on Sunday morning.
Sir Elton shared a photo of himself, pen in hand, sitting next to Furnish at a desk, with a piece of paper in front of them. The accompanying caption red: ‘That’s the legal bit done. Now on to the ceremony!’
Elton’s first post on his specially-created Instagram page was an invite to his wedding. The note read: ‘Sir Elton John and David Furnish request the pleasure of your company to celebrate their wedding on Sunday the 21st of December.’
The couple have invited a string of celebrities to the big event at their estate in Windsor, England. They began arriving for the ceremony on Sunday morning, with the likes of David and Victoria Beckham, David Walliams and his wife Lara Stone, and Liz Hurley and her son, Damian, all arriving by car. The Beckhams were joined by their adorable children, Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and daughter Harper for the bash. Sir Elton is godfather to both Brooklyn and Romeo. Burberry boss, Christopher Bailey was there with his partner, actor Simon Woods. These well-heeled guests were treated to an exquisitely delicious food. On the menu was a starter of wild mushroom soup with truffle cream, beef short rib and caramelized onion pie with roast potatoes and parsnips in horseradish butter, finished off with a dessert of warm chocolate pudding and vanilla ice cream.
The revellers enjoyed a lavish feast on simple-yet-elegant tables festooned with giant bouquets of red roses, the same style of flower which decorated the reception at their 2005 civil ceremony. Meanwhile, drinks on offer was Pouilly-Fume 2009, a Sauvignon Blanc which starts around £55-a-bottle, and Laurent-Perrier Rose champagne, which retails for between £40 and £70. The pictures show a relatively low-key affair for the rock legend, famed for his love of throwing lavish and over-the-top bashes: 650 people famously flocked to his 2005 reception.
According to sources close to the family, The Sun was told that, ‘Elton and David have been planning this for months. Elton is flamboyant but, for once, this will be decidedly low-key affair. ‘Only close friends and family are invited – it’s going to be a small, intimate do.’
The high-profile couple have been together for 21 years, after meeting at a dinner party in 1993. Speaking in 2010 of the first time they met, Elton gushed: ‘He was very well dressed, very shy. The next night we had dinner. ‘We fell in love very quickly.’ Adding how they have kept the romance alive for over two decades, he added: ‘Every Saturday for 16 years, we’ve sent each other a card no matter where we are in the world, to say how much we love each other.’
