Chelsea’s unbeaten Premier league run came to an end today and it did so at the hands of Newcastle.
Some fans had expected Chelsea to go the entire season unbeaten but even the fans who expected Chelsea to lose didn’t think their first defeat would come at the hands of Newcastle. Two second half strikes from Papis Cisse and some wonderful defending ensured that Chelsea’s first defeat of the season came at the hands of Alan Pardew’s struggling side despite Newcastle playing over 12 minutes with 10 men
Chelsea dominated the first half and should have gone ahead through Willian when the Brazilian was given a clear sight of goal after good work by Costa and Hazard but the Brazilian fired wide. Chelsea continued to dominate play in the second half but they could not find an opening and they were made to pay for their profligacy in the 57th minute as Papis Cisse who had only been on the pitch for four minutes was on hand to tap in Sami Ameobi’s cross and give Newcastle United the lead. Chelsea looked for a quick response and could have gotten one when Hazard fired onto the post. Newcastle’s second came from Ameobi again as he rounded off a swift counter in style. Newcastle’s lead was threatened after Taylor was sent off for a second yellow card. Drogba pulled one back for Chelsea in the 83rd minute but Newcastle held on to inflict Chelsea’s first defeat of the season.
This loss means that Mourinho is still yet to pick up a win at St. James’ park
