Death and violence on television shows seems to be the in thing as it seems to connect the viewers with the mortality of the characters on television. However, when the deaths of perceived lead characters happen, it shocks and touches the compassionate and humane side of the audience especially if the death happens in a violent manner to characters that are loved and well portrayed by the actors. More so, modern day television programmes thrive on elements of shock and surprise which somehow endears viewers to the show. On this note, here are my most shocking television deaths
The Starks, “Game of Thrones,”
Cause of death: Multiple killings by knives, bows and arrows
The “Red wedding” episode of the Season four of Game of Thrones was probably the most talked about violent scene on television. For people that have not been able to read the books, no one really expected the death of Robb Stark whom many expected to avenge the killing of his father and the injustice done to his family. It was truly traumatic for those of us who hadn’t read the books and didn’t know what to expect, as we came face on with “The Red Wedding” episode that touched even the meanest of viewers. One moment, it way a joyous occasion filled with merry and the next a blood bath. It was at “The Red Wedding” episode that we said goodbye to Catelyn Stark (Michelle Fairley), Robb’s wife Talisa (Oona Chaplin) and Robb Stark himself (Richard Madden) including countless number of his loyal soldiers. If there was ever a time viewers of Game of Thrones wished the television adaptation veered from the original story, it was the “Red Wedding” episode.
Joss Carter, “Person of Interest,”
Cause of death: Bullet to the chest
A lot of viewers and fans of the action thriller show “Person of Interest” were not in anyway expecting the death of Taraji P. Henson‘s character, Detective Joss Carter. Joss Carter was shot and killed by Officer Simmons as she attempted to protect John Reese (Jim Caviezel) and herself. Viewers were in no way expecting the cold blooded killing of Joss Carter who was a straight and upright Cop who constantly provided assistance to John Reese in his crusade to protect ordinary citizens from imminent danger. However, the death of Taraji Henson’s character in no way diminished the appeal of the “Person of Interest” show, it however shocked and surprised viewers who have come to know her as the Cop that served to make sure the good team stayed on the lawful side to a certain extent.
Lord Eddard ‘Ned’ Starks “Game of Thrones,”
Cause of death: Beheading
The death of the Lord of Winterfell, Lord Eddard Stark (Sean Bean) was totally unexpected as the Game of Thrones show was basically just picking up. Perhaps we the viewers should have seen it coming especially for readers of George R.R. Martin’s books. Moreover, what added to the shock was that everybody expected Joffrey to spare the life of Ned Stark bearing in mind he was the protagonist and the fact that the show was barely midway into its first season. The incredibly shocking death of Ned Stark set the tone for the more traumatic deaths and killings that the Fame of Thrones show came to be known for.
