UEFA have allowed Manchester City to field just one club-trained player in their Champions League squad this season due to the threat of legal action.
Manchester City have just one club-trained player in their Champions League squad – three fewer than Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool, as the threat of legal action against UEFA allowed the Citizens to bend the rules.
City were forced to name a 21-man squad for this season’s competition rather than the standard 25-man squad as punishment for breaching Financial Fair Play rules last year.
Though they were still expected to name their squad under the same rules as every other club in the competition – 13 overseas players, four club-trained players and four association-trained players.
UEFA are believed to have then agreed to lower their quota of eight players either club-trained or association-trained to five because of their reduced squad size.
This means that Dedryck Boyata is the only club-trained player in City’s Champions League squad, with Joe Hart, Frank Lampard, James Milner and Gael Clichy all coming under the association-trained category.
Daniel Geey, a football law specialist and FFP expert, believed that UEFA have “rewritten the rules” to allow City to compete in the Champions League without further punishment.
“UEFA have effectively rewritten their home-grown player rule. There is nothing in UEFA or FFP regulations about the home-grown rule changing. Five out of 21 [domestic quota] was not a proportionate reduction,” he said.
Paris Saint-Germain have also only registered one home-grown player for the competition this season following a similar punishment, though both clubs insist that they have fully complied with UEFA’s rules regarding squad registration.
City look to have got off the hook as UEFA have been very lenient, though the threat of complex legal action from the Premier League champions is believed to have had an influence in the relaxed regulations.
Should Manchester City have been punished for naming just one club-trained player in Champions League squad?
