Mourinho reveals plans for Courtois and Cech

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has revealed that he plans to break the news to Petr Cech and Thibaut Courtois over who will be his first choice goalkeeper on Sunday.

The Portuguese tactician has already made his mind up over who will be first choice but is yet to let his players know.

Cech has been first choice at Stamford Bridge for the past decade, since arriving as a 22-year-old from Rennes in the summer of 2004.

But for the first time since, he faces serious competition for his place from the Belgium No 1 stopper Courtois.

The 22-year-old Belgian has enjoyed three trophy-laden seasons on loan at Atletico Madrid, where last season he excelled as they won the Spanish league and reached the Champions League final.

Courtois featured in last night’s 2-0 pre-season win over Real Sociedad at Stamford Bridge and Mourinho explained: ‘I played [Courtois] 90 minutes because he was injured and he didn’t play last weekend.

‘Petr played the two matches in Turkey, the first half against Ferencvaros.

‘[Mark] Schwarzer played the second half against Ferencvaros.

‘Courtois, since he arrived, played only 45 minutes against Werder Bremen and he needs to play.

‘I want to give minutes to everybody so the decision that today he played, was not me saying he’s the first choice for Monday, but because he didn’t play in the last three matches.’
