Louis van Gaal named Argentine forward, Di Maria as a transfer forward earlier this month, and previously faced competition from Paris Saint-Germain to land the 26-year-old.
But United’s hopes were given a significant boost this afternoon after Real boss Carlo Ancelotti confirmed that Di Maria had rebuffed an offer to stay at the Bernabeu before requesting a transfer from the European champions.
‘Di María has asked to leave and rejected an offer from the club. If he does not find a future solution, he stays – no problem’, Ancelotti is reported to have said.
Real are holding out for a £50m fee for the winger, while Di Maria will command in the region of £200,000-per-week in wages should he leave the Spanish capital.
