Liverpool have made enquiries for Monaco striker Radamel Falcao but expect the Colombian to join Real Madrid.
The Reds have also been in touch with Paris St Germain regarding a move for Edinson Cavani but were told he is no longer available.
Falcao was wanted by Liverpool on a season-long loan which would cost around £10m with a view to making the deal permanent.
Liverpool earmarked the Monaco forward after going cool on Wilfried Bony at Swansea and seeing QPR striker Loic Remy fail his medical.
Although Falcao has just recovered from a cruciate ligament injury, Liverpool scouts watched him against Arsenal at The Emirates last week where he scored the decisive goal in their 1-0 friendly win.
Madrid will need to sell one more non-EU player before recruiting Falcao and will consider loaning Angel di Maria to Monaco in return after Paris St Germain pulled out of a deal for the Argentina international.
