Two years ago, Nkem Okorofor won the Music Meets Runway Foundation Face of MMR Competition. With the second edition of the competition underway, we decided to catch up with Nkem for us to find out more about journey since winning Music Meets Runway Foundation Face of MMR Competition:
Tell us a little bit about yourself. Where are you from? What is your educational background?
Hi, my name is Nkem Okorafor and I just turned 22 yesterday. I am from Abia state, Nigeria and I am studying Animal Science at the University of Calabar.
What is your favorite part about being a model?
My favorite part will have to be the travelling, experiencing new places and meeting new people.
When did you win Face of MMR and what is it about the competition that appealed to you?
I won Face of MMR in 2012. The show appealed to me because it was a fresh concept and I could actually see the models having fun. I mean who doesn’t want the opportunity to dance and go crazy on the runway.
What was that experience like for you and how did you feel when you won the competition?
The experience was amazing. I got recognized everywhere, almost like a mini celebrity. I was shocked when I won, because we didn’t even know there was a competition. It was a very pleasant surprise, considering I had been travelling back and forth from Calabar to Lagos for almost 2 years trying to get my big break.
How has winning the competition and being the Music Meets Runway brand ambassador changed your career as a model?
Winning the competition has turned my career 180 degrees; I’m talking more shows, shoots, ad campaigns, shows outside the country, it has been amazing.
What are your tips for the winner of Face Of MMR 2014?
My top tip is…. to be humble and know how to do your job well because only then can you truly shine.
Who is your favorite model in the world?
Hmmm…. I admire a lot of them, research on their various techniques, fuse it together and make it mine. So Tyra Banks, Cara Delevigne, and Jourdan Dunn.
What are your tips for staying in shape and looking fab?
To stay in shape, I eat healthy and detox regularly.
What’s your take on the modeling world and the impact it is has on body image in relation to young girls specifically?
The modeling world focuses on perfection, and unfortunately no one is perfect, it’s all an illusion. So a lot of young girls want to look like models and are unhealthy in the process. There is absolutely nothing wrong with just being the best you that you can be.
What is next for you?
Well, I intend to keep pursuing my career in modeling outside Nigeria, it’s a passion and I won’t give it up easily.
