The English Premier league is notorious for signing super stars from other leagues to come in and do quite well. This trend was probably first really started by Arsene Wenger when his international team lifted the title in 1998 with players like Dennis Bergkamp, Marc Overmars Emmanuel Petit and Nicolas Anelka. Over the years, Wenger continued to import players and do very well.
Ferguson too had his Imports at Manchester United, most famous of which remain Eric Cantona and Cristiano Ronaldo. Others are van Nistelrooy and Nemanja Vidic. Other teams soon started bringing in players from other countries but when Mourinho and Benitez arrived, they gave rise to a whole new era. Benitez lead Liverpool’s Spanish invasion with Alonso, Luis Garcia and Riera as well as Reina while Mouriinho built the Most international team that didn’t play at home when they were in Bernabeu with Drogba, Carvalho, Makelele, Geremi, Mikel Obi, Kezman, Crespo, Ballack and Shevchenko. After this most teams focused on importing players rather than developing natural talents.
Recently, England has turned its sights to Spain and is steadily collecting talents from the la liga. Ever since Torres landed at Anfield from Atletico and became a big hit, Premier league teams started taking note of la liga players, Aguero joined Manchester city, Mata joined Chelsea. But last season saw a flurry of La liga players as Negredo and Navas joined Manchester City, Ozil joined Arsenal and Soldado joined Tottenham and it has continued this season with Diego Costa and Luis Filipe all coming into Chelsea to join premier league returnee Fabregas, Adan Herera moving to Mancheser United and Alexis Sanchez joining Arsenal.
The la liga raid is not over with Arsenal still targeting Khadira and Manchester United remain keen on Di Maria.
The result is more refined soccer in the League but less development of the English game as was evident in the world cup.
