A driver lynched a Police Corporal in Benin City, the Edo State capital. The incident happened on Uwa Street by First East Circular Road Junction, Benin City, when a police patrol team stopped the driver who was driving a vehicle without a number plate.
The Police Corporal identified as Osas Agbonmwenma, was serving at St. Saviour Police Division, Benin.
Sources said the driver refused to stop when he was ordered to do so. And in an attempt to force him to stop, Corporal Agbonmwenma and other policemen engaged the driver in a fight and in the process the driver grabbed Agbonmwenma tightly by the neck.
Attempts by other policemen to free their colleague from the vicegrip proved futile as the huge driver held the corporal till he became unconscious.
Another version of the story is that the policemen succeeded in arresting the driver and as Corporal Agbonmwenma was taking him to the police station, the driver diverted the vehicle to a different place.
This prompted the Corporal to forcefully stop him around St. Maria Goretti Grammar School area where the driver allegedly hit the Corporal on the forehead with an object.
He collapsed and was later taken to a hospital where he died.
The Edo State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Noble Uwoh said the driver has been arrested and the car was in police custody, adding that the incident was being investigated.
