Sky Sports are reporting that Everton’s plan to bring Romelu Lukaku back to Goodison Park, either on loan or in a permanent transfer, is unlikely to come off with the young striker keen to break into Jose Mourinho’s first team.
That hasn’t deterred Roberto Martinez from going back to the Blues for an alternative though, with the Toffees pursuing another young Chelsea star should the deal for the Belgian fail to come off.
Ghanian winger Christian Atsu is said to be the player Martinez is interested in bringing to Goodison Park, with the former Porto player yet to return from his post World Cup holiday
22-year-old Atsu played in all three of his country’s group games in Brazil, with the Black Stars narrowly missing out on qualification to the knockout stages.
Despite joining from the Portuguese capital for £3.5 million last summer, Atsu is yet to feature for Jose Mourinho’s Blues side, being sent out on loan to Vitesse Arnhem immediately after arriving in September.
The wideman made 30 appearances in the Netherlands, scoring 5 goals and setting up 6, with Vitesse finishing in sixth spot in the Eredivisie.
Atsu had looked like heading out on another loan this year, with another European club the likely destination until Everton registered their interest. Sky Sports say the player is very much interested in taking that loan spell with Roberto Martinez’s side, who made such good use of loan signings from Chelsea, Barcelona and Manchester City last season, finishing 5th ahead of both Tottenham and Manchester United.
