England’s World Cup hopes hang by a thread – and Liverpool midfielder and England skipper Steven Gerrard is receiving the brunt of fan’s frustrations.
Roy Hodgson’s side really needed to avoid defeat in Sao Paulo , but two goals from Liverpool striker Luis Suarez gave Uruguay the win, with a Wayne Rooney equaliser sandwiched in between. England were workmanlike and threatened on occasion, but simply couldn’t cope with – or match – the goalscoring prowess of Suarez.
Many aspects factored in to England’s defeat; not enough quality in the final third from full backs Leighton Baines and Glen Johnson, a failure to use the width of Danny Welbeck and Raheem Sterling, and even possibly some bad luck after Rooney hit the crossbar and Uruguay defender Diego Godin somehow escaped a red card.
Yet the one player who is receiving most of the criticism is captain Gerrard, whose terrible end to the season with Liverpool has seemingly carried over to the World Cup. Gerrard was arguably at fault for both Uruguay goals, gave the ball away too often and once he had made a mistake for Suarez’s winner, tried to do the spectacular – with limited success.
This could be Gerrard’s last England international – but judging from these tweets from England fans after the game, there won’t be many tears shed over that possibility.
