Brasil kicked off the 2014 FIFA World Cup with a football-style Carnival Opening Ceremony on Thursday, June 12, 2014 at the Arena de Sao Paulo 62,600-capacity stadium filled with thousands of dancing yellow-clad samba fans, who seemed undisturbed by the construction delays and on-going protests.
The watching world were indeed treated to a celebration of colour, culture, dance and music as Brazil officially ushered in the 2014 World Cup.
The guests at the World Cup 2014 opening ceremony included Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and FIFA president Sepp Blatter.
The centre of the show was a giant LED ball made up of more than 90,000 light clusters. More than 600 artists, including acrobatic gymnasts, trampolinists, marshal arts-style capoeira performers and stilt walkers also featured in a homage to Brazil’s three great treasures: nature, people football.
Jennifer Lopez, rapper Pitbull and pop star Claudia Leitte bounced around the giant stage that emerged from the giant LED ball and now resembling a peeled melon singing the official World Cup theme song “We Are One (Ole Ola)” as Brazilian band Olodum banged drums below.
J-Lo, dressed in a low-cut sparkling green outfit, turned up for the performance despite earlier reports that she wouldn’t be able to attend.
