Italy 0 – 1 Costa Rica match review #Brasil2014

share on:

The Italians were guilty of complacency as their lack of pace was exposed by a seemingly un-fancied Costa Rican side ghosted past the 2006 world champions in what was a master class display of midfield tenacity and direct system of attack.

The game wore on with both teams battling for every blade of grass in the pitch and in the 35th minute, Balotelli missed a glorious chance to put Italy ahead and in the 42nd minute, Joel Campbell went down under a strong challenge from Chielini in the Italian box but the referee waved play on and in the 44th minute, Bryan Ruiz ran onto a glorious cross from the left and headed the ball onto the bar and just over the line (as goal line technology confirmed) to give Costa Rica the win.

Italy will go into their final group game knowing that victory against Uruguay will guarantee them qualification, but defeat however will mean an early trip home. For Costa Rica however they have surpassed expectations by qualifying first from a group they were expected to finish bottom of.
