Having the ballon d’or winner on the pitch wasn’t enough for Portugal as Pepe’s hot hotheadedness coincided perfectly with Ozil finding his best form and Muller finding his goal scoring touch as Germany ran riot against a Portugal side that looked more confused than Del Bosque three nights ago.
Germany dominated the match from kick off and in the 11th minute, Muller had no problem scoring from the spot after Joao Pereira brought down Mario Gotze in the box. in the 32nd minute, Portugal’s zonal marking of corners was exposed as Hummels arrived late in the box to head home Germany’s second. Things went from bad to worse for Portugal as champions league winner Pepe let his frustration get the better of him as he challenged Muller physically for play acting and he subsequently received his marching orders. in the 46th minute, Bruno Alves made a hash of what was meant to be a routine clearance and the ball fell kindly to Muller who slotted home his second and Germany’s third. In the second half Germany created a lot of chances but their finishing was as dreadful as Portugal’s defending but Muller finally rounded off his hat trick when Rui Patricio palmed Schurrle’s square pass perfectly into his path as if begging him to finally score an international hat trick.
Germany are off and running in Brazil, but for Portugal, it;s back to the drawing board or it could be back to Lisbon really early.
