Benzema was the star of the match as Les Blues ran riot against ten men Honduras to open their 2014 World Cup campaign with a victory in Porto Allegre. Both teams got off to a fiery start with France winning the earlier exchanges. In the 21st minute, Griezmann saw his header from Patrice Evra’s cross come back off the crossbar. Following a massive row in the 25th minute Wilson Palacios and Paul Pogba were both booked, then in the 43rd minute Palacious brought down Pogba as the Frenchman looked set to apply a finish to Debuchy’s cross the Stoke city man was sent off for a second yellow and a penalty was awarded. Benzema stepped up cooly to send the keeper the wrong way and send France one nil up. In the 52nd minute, Benzema hit a shot on the volley from Debuchy’s cross and the ball came off the post and hit the goal keeper and crossed the line as verified by the goal line technology then in the 71st minute, Debuchy’s blocked shot fell to Benzema who powered a shot past Valladares at the near post. France will go into their next match knowing that a win would see them book a place in the second round of the World Cup.
