Davido Is The Best Male African Artist – MAMA

share on:

Davido beat 4 other nominees from Tanzania (Diamond), from Angola (Anselmo Ralph), from South Africa (Donald) and from Nigeria (Wizkid) to win the Best Male Artist at the 2014 MTV African Music Awards this weekend. This comes after his winning of African Act Of The Year At Vodafone Ghana Music Awards last month. Since his rise with Dami Duro, Davido has been on a roll constantly releasing singles like Gobe, Ekuro etc which led to the release of his debut album soon after. His recent songs have spun off street anthems too due to their viralness notable among them is Skelewu which has been a radio favourite for a very long time. Davido, in such a short time, has developed a huge following which due to similarity in fan base with Wizkid, bred a sort of rivalry between the two. Davido and Wizkid, however, have never claimed enmity of any sort (except a few well placed subs from Wizkid that one time) and have even been spotted hanging out like buddies but the fans of the two make it look like there is strong beef between the two. Beef? Maybe not. But competition? Definitely. Most people are also of the opinion that Davido has replaced Wizkid as the most talented young Nigerian and Davido’s Aye which has been one of the biggest songs this year (and the most popular YouTube video in Nigeria in 1st quarter 2014!) helps this claim. Davido’s second single of the year which is Tchelete with Mafikizolo has also generated one of the biggest hypes in the industry this year. It then comes as no surprise that Davido clinches this year’s award for Best African Male at the MAMA’s. We will like to see what path his sophomore album will take…and if maybe he will release it before Wizkid who last released an album in 2011.
