Insurgents Boko Haram, who currently terrorize the north-eastern part of Nigeria, are part of a number of terrorist groups sponsored by late al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.
According to the report, bin Laden in 2002 sent out $3million to these organizations, Boko Haram a part of them.
While the US officially says there are no deep links between Boko Haram and al-Qaeda, some analysts believe that there are strong ties between the two.
“There were channels between bin laden and Boko Haram leadership,” one senior U.S. told The Daily Beast. “He gave some strategic direction at times.
Documents recovered from bin Laden’s Pakistani den in 2011 showed a number of messages from Boko Haram to the terrorist leader, but U.S. officials maintain that Osama never replied.
