We have heard of small body organs grown in labs like the nose and ears and even lips but we have never heard of a sex organ being grown until now.
Four vaginas grown in a laboratory in the USA, from the cells of four teenage girls have been implanted back into them. The organs were said to be working perfectly in the girls, who were aged between 13 and 18 at the time of surgery.
Born with a syndrome that left them without vaginas and uteri or reproductive organs that were underdeveloped, the girls were chosen for a ground-breaking experiment which turned out to be a success.
Dr Anthony Atala, lead researcher of the US team, said: “This may represent a new option for vaginal reconstructive surgeries.”
The treatment was carried out between 2005 and 2008 and now all the patients are able to have normal sex lives.
According to statistics, one in every 5,000 women is born without a vagina, cervix or womb.
