Barely two weeks after the NIS recruitment that claimed lives in the stampede all over the nation, The University of Benin, (UNIBEN) has organized a screening exercise for fresh students that has caused another heavy stampede. It was gathered that scores of students sustained varying and “very serious” degrees of injuries in the stampede, just as one was rumored dead.
A witness in the surroundings says that the stampede started when students started forcing their way into the exam premises and the UNIBEN security personnel forcefully closed the gate against them causing them to fall and hundreds of them stepping over those on the ground.
This morning, it was noted that the applicants were still standing in mass at the gate that led to the exam venue.
One of the applicants reported:
“It was a terrible thing and it was so serious. It began when the students were attempting to enter into the hall and the security men said no. It was then that some of the students attempted to force their way into the place and the security men forcefully closed the gates on them. That is how hundreds of them fell, some this side and others that side. Those who got up marched on those still on the ground to get out of the confusion. Several people who were injured were rushed to the hospital, but am not sure anyone died, though many of them were seriously injured.”
Meanwhile, UNIBEN’s public relation officer, Barr. Harrison Osarenren, asserted that nobody died at the screening.
