360Fashion: We look at the worst fashion nightmares in recent football history

share on:

After Cristiano Ronaldo suit and cap fashion stunt at the Copa Del Rey final in midweek, we look at some other debatable fashion selections from footballers in recent years

Many an icon has come and gone throughout the years from David Beckham and Zinedine Zidane to Djibril Cisse and Nicolas Anelka, Luis Figo, Grenaro Gattuso all with their own ideas of breaking the trend.

Here are five other examples of footballers who have taken gambles with regard to fashion.

Mario Balotelli

During his time with Manchester City controversial Italy striker Mario Balotelli was snapped in a rather unusual looking piece of headwear. His knitted chicken-style hat attracted much interest from the media and perpetuated his iconic status at the Etihad.

Lionel Messi

One would think that when you arrive at a ceremony to be crowned the most prestigious award in football that you would play it fairly safe on the fashion front. A standard black jacket/suit combo , white shirt black tie perhaps. But Lionel Messi was surely being paid a lot of money for his spotted suit and bow tie at the 2013 Ballon d’or awards. The Argentine made more headlines for his choice of attire that evening, and put himself firmly in contention for worst dressed footballer to ever win the award.

Djibril Cisse

The former Liverpool and Queens Park Ranger’s striker never failed to gain attention through his bizarre collection of fashion. There were simply too many examples of his bad dress sense to use to fit the piece, so here is the Frenchman sporting a black jacket with linen-type trousers, tucket into his blue and white striped socks and some odd looking footwear. Not to mention the ‘Where’s Wally’ style glasses.

Patrick Viera

The Frenchman sports some rough-cut jeans, a bright yellow polo and a salmon coloured blazer. If his coaching tips at Manchester City are anything on the standard of this look, Vieira best start searching for an alternative day job.

Emmanuel Adebayor

Here is Tottenham Hotspur striker Emmanuel Adebayor applying his typical amount of swag to a charity cat-walk back in 2007. The then Arsenal striker rocked a striped jacket and trousers with a scarf and regular pair of converse shoes. A decent effort for a good cause, but Adebayor best stick to scoring goals than trying to set fashion trends.

Which world footballer has the worst dress sense?
