In a tragic tale,an 11 month old has been killed by an “American pit bull’ type dog while asleep upstairs in bed. According to chief superintendent Chris Bithell of Lancashire police, he told BBC that Ava-Jayne Corless was asleep in bed upstairs at a house in Blackburn when she was attacked by a pit bull terrier reportedly called killer while her mother Chloe,20, and partner, Lee Wright, 26, who is not the child’s father were downstairs at the time of the horrific incident around 11pm on Monday.
He also said the suspects were initially arrested on child neglect charges, but were then re arrested on a more serious charge of manslaughter. Police were first alerted by ambulance staff who tried to resuscitate Ava-Jayne at the property in Emily street but she was pronounced dead at Royal Blackburn hospital a short while later.
The pet dog which has been destroyed was confirmed by the police to be a breed prohibited under section 1 of the dangerous Dog’s act 1991. A post Mortem exam is expected to take place to determine the exact cause of death.
Tributes have been left for baby Ava-Jayne in Emily street Blackburn which has been cordoned off.
