In a case of the dreaded “mummy’s boyfriend’ syndrome, a 4-month old baby who was sexually and physically abused in new Mexico by her mother’s boyfriend has died.
According to Albuquerque police, baby Izabellah died on Sunday after being on life support for two weeks for trauma and head injuries inflicted on her by Elijah Fernandez, 19, who was allegedly high on synthetic marijuana. When arrested, Fernandez claimed the baby had fallen from the bed, but later told detectives he hit the baby on her face twice because he was stressed about his lack of employment, and her incessant crying disturbed him. Doctors who checked the baby also noticed signs of sexual assault.
According to doctors, this was not the first time this was happening as they had allegedly referred the infant and her two year old sister to the states CYFD three times before the incident because of past injuries. The mother Angelique Montana said she left her baby with Elijah to go and do the laundry.
Fernandez faces charges of child abuse resulting in death and aggravated sexual penetration.
