‘The Hobbit’ Desolates Box Office For 3rd Straight Week

The second movie in The Hobbit series, The Desolation Of Smaug has remained top of the Box Office for the 3rd straight week.

The Peter Jackson sequel raked in nearly $29.9 million this weekend, according to early estimates.

Sir Ian McKellen and Martin Freeman reprise their respective roles as Gandalf and Bilbo in the fantasy film that follows their quest to reclaim their homeland from a fire-spitting dragon named Smaug. The movie already boasts nearly $614 million in earnings worldwide.

Disney animated feature Frozen fell just short of topping the film with more than $28.8 million.

Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel are among stars lending their voices to the Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee-directed epic adventure, about a girl who traps a kingdom in an eternal winter storm.

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues followed at three with nearly $20.2 million in earnings.

Will Ferrell reprises his role as San Diego’s top rated newsman, Ron Burgundy, in the Adam McKay-directed feature, which follows the anchor as he takes on New York’s first 24-hour news channel.

American Hustle came in this weekend at four with nearly $19.6 million. Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper and Jeremy Renner star in the David O. Russell crime drama about a real-life con man forced to work with the FBI.

Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street rounds out the top five with a $18.5 million debut.

Leonardo DiCaprio stars as real-life stockbroker Jordan Belfort in the feature, about the wealthy stockbroker’s criminal rise and fall.
