It all started with one simple but incredibly ignorant tweet
Going to Africa. Hope I don’t get AIDS. Just kidding. I’m white!
— Justine Sacco (@JustineSacco) December 20, 2013
Justine Sacco was a PR executive for major media company IAC who tweeted a racist ‘joke’ on Friday that sparked a social media revolt has been fired from her position following the incident.
Justine Sacco – the now-former Communications Director for IAC, a company owned by Barry Diller – was about to board a 12-hour flight from London to Cape Town when she Tweeted: ‘Going to Africa. Hope I don’t get AIDS. Just Kidding. I’m White!’
The post had been retweeted over 3,000 times and was picked up by media outlets around the world, however Sacco remained completely unaware of it all because she was in the air.
The blonde publicist was pictured arriving in Cape Town looking shocked and talking on her phone.
Moments later the offending Tweet and Sacco’s Twitter account disappeared.
A spokeswoman for the company has now confirmed Sacco has indeed been sacked.
What makes this so despicable is the typical racist stereotypical thinking of keeping the most negative statistics on a people without factoring in change. What I mean is that even though Africa is known for the HIV disease, AID For Africa has reported a 40% decrease in infection from 2001.
People on social media were outraged and Twitter especially went abuzz and the impressive part is that a lot of the demographic were white people calling her to order and condemning her actions.
There were also the sarcastic tweets
Going to North America. Hope I don’t get shot by George Zimmerman. Just kidding! I’m white.#HasJustineLandedYet

And definitely the memes came up – that’s always the fun part.

The great thing about this a huge lesson has been learnt about Africa by lots of social ignorants, Justine losing her job has shown people to watch what they say (tweet), and most importantly, AID For Africa must be getting the most traffic to its website than ever. Wanna know how? Somebody bought the domain name justinesacco.com anmd redirected it to the AID For Africa funding page. Imagine how much would have been donated by now. You can go ahead and donate too.
