“Ki ni gbogbo eleyi ke? E ba mi so fun omo Pryse yen ko fi rap music ba ile je fun awon ti won le rap…”
What have we done to deserve Pryse? Are we being punished by God for something our fore fathers’ did? Is there no one at Chocolate city who can shut down “PROJECT PRYSE”?
Chocolate City is one of the few Nigerian Music labels that are well structured with people that understand music at the helm of affairs. Majority of Nigerian Music labels are just music labels on Twitter, Facebook and of course, on the back of the CD jacket with no physical office or staff but that’s not the case with Chocolate City.
With Audu calling the shots at Chocolate City & MI serving as VP music, these two people are so much into Hip-Hop that I consider them authorities in rap music.
However, It came as a surprise when in February 2012, Chocolate City signed Pryse as their first official and only female artist. It was a surprise not because she wasn’t good enough but the likes of Eva Alordiah was already making waves as an upcoming female rapper and nobody was even talking about Pryse not even at hair saloons or suya joints.
I personally thought that they signed her so that MI could coach her on “How to be a better rapper with better lines” and because of that, I didn’t entirely give up on her.
Chocolate City carried a series of promotions for Pryse”s debut single “Eleto” and these promotions included leaving comments on blogs hyping the very dead single.
Eleto has a very good hook with dead punch lines like “You can’t stop my DHL” and she had the guts to refer to herself as the punch line queen in the same song.
When I heard it, the first that came to my mind was “Did Audu sign off on this “Dead on arrival” song? “Why didn’t MI help her a bit with more clever lines”? And my conclusion was “Maybe she had recorded the song before joining Chocolate City and they just had to put it out”.
We didn’t have to wait for long before the self-acclaimed Punch line queen dropped her second single “Niger Delta Money” few days ago and it had classic intelligent lines like “Money in the air like smelly armpit”, “I’m outstanding no balcony” and so many other inspiring punch lines.
Here’s my take on Pryse as the first Lady of chocolate City;
- I think Pryse’s parents are supporting her music under Chocolate City because I see no way, Audu and team will be spending money on a dead rapper.
- I believe Pryse is in Chocolate City just so that Chocolate City can boast of having a first lady but still have Pryse’s parents support her music.
- I believe it’s the above 2 points
I think artists should be told the truth even when it hurts and its also our responsibility as record label owners to advice our acts on their career path.
I’m no god but Chocolate City should be bold enough to ask Pryse to either get better at her rap game or give up on rap music like Skales, Dr Sid and maybe try something like signing after all she’s always shouting in her songs.
Pryse will not make it in rap music and if she cannot sing, I think Chocolate City should offer her a desk 9-5 job so that her ID card will forever read “ Chocolate City” and she can spend her video money in the gym.
In conclusion, I think it’s our responsibility as music consumers to let artists know when they are not good enough in music, so they can pack up on time and spend the good part of their lives trying their hands on other things.
Based on the above, I think we should come together and stop PRYSE before it’s too late for her to get a bank job.
