MA RAP MO! WE NEED TO STOP PRYSE FROM RAPPING!!!

share on:

“Ki ni gbogbo eleyi ke? E ba mi so fun omo Pryse yen ko fi rap music ba ile je fun awon ti won le rap…”

What have we done to deserve Pryse? Are we being punished by God for something our fore fathers’ did? Is there no one at Chocolate city who can shut down “PROJECT PRYSE”?

Chocolate City is one of the few Nigerian Music labels that are well structured with people that understand music at the helm of affairs. Majority of Nigerian Music labels are just music labels on Twitter, Facebook and of course, on the back of the CD jacket with no physical office or staff but that’s not the case with Chocolate City.

With Audu calling the shots at Chocolate City & MI serving as VP music, these two people are so much into Hip-Hop that I consider them authorities in rap music.

However, It came as a surprise when in February 2012, Chocolate City signed Pryse as their first official and only female artist. It was a surprise not because she wasn’t good enough but the likes of Eva Alordiah was already making waves as an upcoming female rapper and nobody was even talking about Pryse not even at hair saloons or suya joints.

I personally thought that they signed her so that MI could coach her on “How to be a better rapper with better lines” and because of that, I didn’t entirely give up on her.

Chocolate City carried a series of promotions for Pryse”s debut single “Eleto” and these promotions included leaving comments on blogs hyping the very dead single.

Eleto has a very good hook with dead punch lines like “You can’t stop my DHL” and she had the guts to refer to herself as the punch line queen in the same song.

When I heard it, the first that came to my mind was “Did Audu sign off on this “Dead on arrival” song? “Why didn’t MI help her a bit with more clever lines”? And my conclusion was “Maybe she had recorded the song before joining Chocolate City and they just had to put it out”.

We didn’t have to wait for long before the self-acclaimed Punch line queen dropped her second single “Niger Delta Money” few days ago and it had classic intelligent lines like “Money in the air like smelly armpit”, “I’m outstanding no balcony” and so many other inspiring punch lines.

Here’s my take on Pryse as the first Lady of chocolate City;

  1. I think Pryse’s parents are supporting her music under Chocolate City because I see no way, Audu and team will be spending money on a dead rapper.
  2. I believe Pryse is in Chocolate City just so that Chocolate City can boast of having a first lady but still have Pryse’s parents support her music.
  3. I believe it’s the above 2 points

I think artists should be told the truth even when it hurts and its also our responsibility as record label owners to advice our acts on their career path.

I’m no god but Chocolate City should be bold enough to ask Pryse to either get better at her rap game or give up on rap music like Skales, Dr Sid and maybe try something like signing after all she’s always shouting in her songs.

Pryse will not make it in rap music and if she cannot sing, I think Chocolate City should offer her a desk 9-5 job so that her ID card will forever read “ Chocolate City” and she can spend her video money in the gym.

In conclusion, I think it’s our responsibility as music consumers to let artists know when they are not good enough in music, so they can pack up on time and spend the good part of their lives trying their hands on other things.

Based on the above, I think we should come together and stop PRYSE before it’s too late for her to get a bank job.

  1. Good writing skills. But you lost me when you went off the objectivity trail. Is Pryse the best female rapper out there? Surely not. But does she have the potential to be a contender in this male dominated industry? Certainly.

I’m certain that the good people at CC sign potential and not just the finished product; or how else will you explain the rise and rise of people like MI and Ice Prince?

She’s just a year on the trail (barely) and she’s honing her skills on different tracks and I’m sure she will get better.

Now you sit and think how such a personal attack on someone’s art would make them feel.

    1. I agree with you, There’s room for improvement. I don’t like the angle of the article but then, we all have to take out the good things out of a bad article

  2. U just misjudging d young miss, her flow is not dat bad, maybe she over pushing on d vanacular words to make her song commercial but u don’t have to label her wack……. if I was gonna give her a ln advise I’ll say she should leave d pidgin words alone….let her use her english all thru coz dat seems to be her p…….. I just played d “niger delta money” song, I like it

  3. OMG! I used to think I was the Only one who feels this way for pryse. Pryse has never been good! Her best delivery is on phenom’s omo naija! She wasn’t really good….I thought after signing under choc city, she’ll step up instead, she got worse…wack lines everywhere! I think MI is a bad influence and Mentor to her! That nigga commercialised Hiphop…iceprince followed…loose kaynon is following their steps. No wonder jesse left to make good and meaningful music! Pryse wanted to follow in d steps of MI and Ice but she’s always failing in any attempt! Punchline queen my foot! Am sure if she didn’t sign for choc city, she could av been better atleast by now. Fuck choc city! Fuck pryse!! Fuck the bad mentor MI!!! And fuck Iceprince too!!!!

You guys should do real hiphop and shii! I missed the Days of BLAISE (lord knows where she is now). Even Muna is getting better everyday! Cynthia morgan same!! Splash is coming for y’all.

    @mayoviral

  4. I must say guy, everybody got time to grow. its pryse’s time to grow so let her be. she is doing well for herself and i respect her for that

  5. Cool story, you can sha write. so how many songs have you written that are on air right now? so she could pick corrections from your experience as a song writter. “so many writters in the air like smely armpits”….

  6. nice article but the truth is that there are other wacky rappers on chocolate city not just pryse. ice prince can’t rap to save his own life and the only 2 good rappers on the label are M.I and X.O Senevoe. nuff said

  7. @Keisha, I stand by my comment and since the fire of zamani is not an internationally recognized occurrence, I dear say that I’ll be alright. pun intended

  8. Whoever wrote this non-objective article is sick.. I see no reason why you’d say Pryse is wack.. She’s better than a whole lot of rappers out there… Everybody got their style, if u don’t like Pryse’s style why not move on rather than writing such senseless articles to run her down… In the Enigma competition, she’s the only female that made it to the top ten isnt dat evident that she got potentials… ELETO is a good song except maybe you need cotton wool for your ears.. NIGER DELTA MONEY is okay.. There’s room for Pryse to improve

  9. I do see some potential in Pryse’s ability but she has absolutely no star quality. Maybe she should just write songs and do voice overs or something.
I can’t understand why people are flaring up over someone’s opinion of another’s art. Except of course Chocolate City is here to comment as well.

  10. well That guy just said the truth that all of you know.. stop pretending to be a good adviser or shit.. there are lots of dope and broke rapper out there on the street who ain’t make it, not because they ain’t good but them

  11. none gat the big chance to prove. so when she fucking buy or find her way up there.. she should know it’s not easy and has a lot of work to do and work hard.. not getting on the booth to sing trash. who are you fucking

It’s professor you have there. Intelligent young men.. Tupac, Biggy Small, Big pun, Andre 3000, Jcole. you see all of that brains.. and you like to rub shoulders on em bn likkle learner. i can’t gamble with “listening to music” peoples..Cum on price.. lots of good sperm in the balls.

TRAP sef is right.. ice prince just get luck abi na Oil them they call am. ehen. im head get oil.

  18. You can’t judge an artiste over one or two singles. Let’s wait for her body of work. 2ndly, in the arena of female rappers…she’s different from the “barbie nicki minaj sounding naija female rappers”.

Plus writer was bold enuff to admit she had intelligent lines. Every rapper has their one or two corny lines but then you weight it. Is the intelligent more dan the “dumb”? Its a relative subject…but the fact the writer couldn’t keep the comments solely about the music and had to bring her folks, choc city, banks etc into it makes him a hater.

Critics can be objective and keep it on the music subject matter. Haters can’t. Fair enuff she’s no holy grail but to single her out and write about her in this whole industry full of mediocres is suspect. Its your opinion and I can respect that but it don’t make it right cos 360nobs publishes it.

Pryse is aight…for a femcee, she’s cool. Choc city sees the spark of greatness n so dey tryna light d fire. In Nigeria, popularity is talent. If she was as big as ice prince, u won’t write this.

Pryse keep doing you. Take the good from this n ignore the personal attacks.

  19. @m-trill I beg to differ, popularity can never equate to talent. it never did and it never will.

if you’re the m-trill I’m thinking you are then I’m honored to be in the presence of greatness

  20. My 200kobo: She’s not exceptional but can definitely improve on her craft. Now she’s got the platform and attention, she should capitalize on it and up her game seriously. It might just even be doing the right songs…I don’t really know but it’s funny that I personally preferred her covers lyric and flow wise.

The writer seems to know a lot about her to say her parents may be supporting her career under CC and is likely true if she’s got paid up folks. Why I say so is because CC ‘signed’ a certain Enzo too. Not to beef but quite lacking in the talent department. It’s probably a platform thingy where there may be monetary or other benefits or just plain charitable use of the labels name. No way the dudes at CC would really endorse that level of ‘skill’.not with the level of a Nosa lurking in the background.

I doubt Kennis Music spent a dime on Goldie. Just my take but it’s mot likely she just used the structure to help herself…

@trap: When did X.O. Senovoe join na. I doubt he’s on CC o! Dude is not bad IMO.

Please someone help me tell eLDee why he left K9 with only a viral video with one of the hottest. hottest songs in 2013?!? C’mon, it’s such a pity it’s too late to get the full effect of a timely proper visual clip of KOKOMA.
