Efua’s Style Review: Mai Atafo

share on:

Clothing Designer Ohimai Atafo’s personal style is as well admired as his menswear, womenswear and bridal collections. His coveted suits and blazers are worn by a long list of celebrities and his wedding shows are dreamy, full on productions.

It was recently revealed that Mai Atafo would be one of the mentors on MultiChoice Nigeria’s Fashion Protégé  and we’re curious whether his personal style makes the cut.

Mai Atafo shades of blue show

Mai is often than spotted in his own signature tailoring and designs – bright colours, double-breasted, bold patterns or stripes. He knows how to dress his tall, slim frame and is perhaps the best ad for his own label.

Some events call for a less formal look and Mai’s go to smart-casual look is a shirt, blazer and slim fit jeans. You can’t go much wrong with that combination but he plays it safe and we lose some of that Mai flair and get an altogether less interesting look than his formal, dressed up styling. A different shade of denim, perhaps a skinnier cut and a fun pocket square could elevate the look.

The man is not afraid of colour! A strong trend in his menswear Mai doesn’t just put his models and clients in bold colours, he wears them . While I like a confident man who’s not afraid to take fashion risks, I think head to toe green is best left on the runway. More subtle combinations like or pops of colour in a blazer or shirt against neutrals do the trick.

Rarely do we see Mai in completely casual clothes and I’m relieved as it seems that is certainly not his strong suit! Perhaps it’s the too long, boot cut trousers with the green shoes but Mai doesn’t look his usual suave self.

Mai Atafo casual look In classic tailoring and certainly when wearing  his own bold, well cut pieces, Mai is clearly a dapper man who enjoys fashion and his take on it. More a fashion trend setter than follower I wish this would translate a bit better to his casual style but nobody’s perfect!

We award a Ohima Atafo a could do better 3.5 (knowing full well that a higher score is only a matter of a few looks.)
