BackInTheDays: Songs I Sang As A Child In School and at Home. State Yours…

share on:

Let me take you way back to the days when things were a lot simpler and possibly happier…..or not, for those who couldn’t wait to become adults.

My name is Dupe and I grew up singing some of the songs below….(let’s see if you remember any of them) – :). It didn’t matter if you had a horrible voice, all you had to do was sing at the top of your voice – fun days.

”Oh the grand Old duke of York

He had ten thousand men

He marched them up to the top of the hill

And he matched them down again

And when they were up, they were up, they were up

And when they were down, they were down, they were down

And when they were only half way up, they were neither up or down.”

**********************************************************

“My head, my shoulders, my knees, my toes

My head, my shoulders, my knees, my toes

My head, my shoulders, my knees, my toes

They all belong to Jesus”

Then we’d go faster in the next run…funny stuffs

**********************************************************

‘I am H-A-P-P-Y’

I know I am, I am sure I am,

I am H-A-P-P-Y…HAPPY!

************************************************************

“Wherever you go…

“Wherever you be…

“Do not say Yes, When you need to say No”

Some were bold enough to add…”Baba Ibadan!’ lol

**************************************************************

Holiday is coming

Holiday is coming

No more morning bells

No more teachers whip

Goodbye teachers, goodbye scholars,

We are going to spend a jolly holiday’

This was an exciting song most especially when the long term holidays were about coming up.

But while you’re singing this song, you dare not bring a funny report card to the house – as you’d wish you stayed back in school.

The day is bright, is bright and fresh…

Oh happy day, the day of Joy,

The day is bright….It’s bright and fresh or is it fair? Not sure about that though

H-I-P for the HIP for the HIPOPO

P-O P-O for the HIPPOPO

and T-A-M-U-S for the HIPPOPOTAMUS

The spelling of hippopotamus using the song helped me out in jamb though 🙂 many years ago.

The issue with that word is you either get it or you don’t. One P where there should be double and you miss it completely

M-I-SS-I-SS-I-PPI    Mississippi That’s another song…
****************************************************************
There is no one like mother to me,

No matter how ‘rich’ she may be

I’ve traveled the land and over the seas

There is no one like mother to me.

Parents, listen to your children,

We are the leaders of tomorrow

Try and pay our school fees

And give us sound education

I never understood this song till later, You can imagine that. I just sang the songs with the drums beating loudly in my ears and me matching along with my school mates, hands stretched on your neighbour’s shoulders in order to create space.

At ease! Attention!

As for the songs regarding Avogadro’s Law, Michael Faraday and Isaac Newton…, who else…okay, and songs you sang to memorise the nine planets and The Periodic table, I can only remember a few 🙂

What songs do you remember singing while growing up?

Share in the comment box below….and let’s have fun.

Till then…

Much love…xo
