“Great, fantastic, unbelievable for all the support received” these were the words used by Nigerian football legend, Segun Odegbami at the turnout and general support shown to him at the launch of his book, Me, Football and More – a selection of media writings by ‘Mathematical’ Segun Odegbami, MON with a foreword by Lagos state Governor, Babatune Fashola(SAN).
One of Nigeria’s greatest football commodities, Mr Segun Odegbami(Former Nigerian football team player and Captain) who has for about 34 years written privately and publicly, released a compilation of media writings in a book format on the 6th of September at the Nigeria House in Northhumberland Avenue, London. The 350-paged book follows the sports legend’s peregrinations through sports and the arts.
Speaking on the book, he said, “You are all witnesses to my journey through sports, sports administration and the media-my days in Sports Souvenir and Complete Sports, as a television host, producer and presenter, as a historian, documenting events and building a library of information, data and pictures for posterity, as a manufacturer producing balls, kits and even clothes, as a radio analyst and football manager. About a year ago, the idea to put together a compendium of some of these articles was mooted by a few persons that have been following this part of my life. Thus, we planted the seed of a book”.
In attendance to support the sports star were Mr Odegbami’s daughters one of them being Afrobeats queen Yemisi Odegbami aka May7ven, Funmi Odegbami, as well as Meg Odegbami (his niece who treated the crowd to a beautiful rendition of Whitney Houston’s Miracle), DJ Abrantee, Nikki Laoye, DJ Abass, Alexander Amosu of OK! Nigeria, Dr. Dalhatu Sarki Tarfida who helped launch the book officially and many other dignitaries, press, government officials as well as family friends and fans.
Many in attendance spoke of their pride and excitement at being able to grace the occasion.
“An inspirational event and day. When I’m not playing music I’m watching football. I now feel inspired to write a book”, said DJ and radio presenter Abrantee.
“Today I’m happy to be here, Baba Shegs has been a legend. To put his life into a book is amazing”, said artist Nikki Laoye.
Alexander Amosu of OK magazine stated, “Great to be here to be part of the book lunch, a great man who has giving great inspiration.”
DJ Abass made mention of the importance of documentation, and praised Mr Odegbami in his effort at documenting his career.
His daughters expressed their honour and privilege at being able to share the day with a great man.
The night ended beautifully with Mr Odegbami autographing his book for friends, family and fans.
