Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 – A Gigantic Smartphone.

share on:

The Samsung Galaxy Mega has been seemingly designed to fufile two steps in Samsung Mobile plane

1. Enter the new, uncharted territory of the 6+ Market.
2. Offer an affordable large display smartphone to customers who can’t afford or don’t need a Galaxy Note 2.

Not forgetting so quickly that the Galaxy Mega 5.8 has a much bigger brother The Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3, but we are reviewing the Mega 5.8 today.

The Mega 5.8 is an ultimate mid-range device which borrows some software tricks from its flagship the Samsung Galaxy S4. The price of the Mega 5.8 is 60,000 Naira Only in Various Nigerian Markets.Samsung-Galaxy-Mega-5.8-Review-001-box
360Nobs Rating: 3.5 Stars/ 5Stars

Dual-sim, Large screen, Expandable Memory, Decent battery life, Good for gaming.

Mid-range specs, Low resolution screen, Underwhelming performance

To get the price to 60,00 Naira Samsung has had to tighten the specifications with Lower resolution display, a dual core processor and slower graphics processor. The real question her is does all these affect the phone in the real world, Lets Find out.

      HARD WARE:
As the phone name suggests the Mega 5.8 is one hell of a big phone. At first glance it has almost the same design as the S4 but looks more like the Mega 6.3. It is a very tricky device to operate with one hand considering the size of it’s screen and will leave your thumbs stretching to an extremely abnormal length when used with one hand, That said you may want to stick with using you two hands for a more comfortable use.nnnnnnnnnnn

The Mega 5.9 sports a 5.8 TFT screen with qHD (540 x 960 Pixels) resolution which doesn’t get us at 360NoBS excited in anyway. It has a pixel density of 190PPI. The pixel density is low but the colours still come out beautiful, a trick Samsung knows how to play with vibrant colours and decent contrast. In attempting to keep the phone’s pricing as low as possible Samsung decided to lower the amount of pixels stuffed into the phone. If you get the Mega 5.8 close to a Samsung S3 or Samsung S4 or even the Note 2 the difference in resolution is very noticeable. The display of the Mega 5.9 is based on LCD Technology so The Samsung Super AMOLED display is clearly missing in he Mega 5.8, Overall though the screen is OK.

Samsung has Unusually stuffed s Broadcom CPU into the Mega5.0. The Mega 5.8 is powered by a 1.4GHZ dual core braodcom processor. It has 1.5GB RAM and a Broadcom Videocore IV Chip for processing graphics. It has 8GB of Internal Storage which is expandable via a MicroSD Card.

The Primary rear facing camera is 8 MegaPixel which is also capable of 1080p video capturing. It has a 1.9 MegaPixel front camera. It must be noted that the Mega 5.8 comes in both Single Sim and dual sim variants. The Mega 5.8 comes with a 2600 mAh battery which should easily last you a whole day on a single charge if used moderately.5.8

The Galaxy Mega 5.8 is running Android 4.2.2 which is almost the latest version of android Os, if not for the introduction of Android 4.3 Jellybean some days ago. As usual TouchWiz Interface runs on-top of Android 4.2.2. The mega 5.8 use Landscape (Phone) or Tablet mode. The Mega 5.8 is capable of solving all your entertainment problems. With Android 4.2.2 phone naturally gets lock screen widgets.

The phone also offers up to 7 Home screens. Samsung has stuffed in some pre-loaded apps into the Mega 5.8 including S planner, Voice Recorder, Samsung Hub Content Store, Samsung Apps Store, Chat On messaging app, Paper Artisy, S translator  Story Album, Samsung Link for transferring and syncing content to other devices via cloud services like Dropbox and Group Play. As you can see Samsung has included a large number of software features seen on the Galaxy S4 to the Mega5.8, However Samsung made sure it didn’t include all S4 Features to keep it’s Price-point Low. Here are the List S4 features missing on the Mega 5.8

-No Air Gestures
-No Hovering
-No Infared Emmiter

It does include Motion gestures. The Phone Offers Multi-window and pop-up pay modes for switching between apps and using more than one application at the same time.

The Camera is a standard 8MP rear facing shooter. The Camera app includes Auto, Best Photo, Continuous Shot, Best Face, Sound and Shot, Panorama and sports. The Colour reproduction is well done. The 1080p video capture are solid with vivid colours.mega

The Mega 5.8 is an interesting idea from Samsung, it is one of those Samsung Phones where you find it hard to figure out who exactly it’s for due to it’s relative small audience. It open a galaxy Note like experience at a much lower price point  but if you’re a spec person I advice that this phone is not for you, Just pay more and get a Galaxy Note2. For Gamers the phone is pretty decent for your gaming needs. We feel the Mega 5.8 is a bit under-powered though but at the price point you don’t expect a power-horse like the Galaxy S4.

If you’re in the market for a large screen without any any need to break the bank for the Note 2, the the Mega 5.8 is definitely for you and if you need dual sim capabilities also. If you want something extremely powerful we advice you go for the Note 2 or if you’re patient enough you can can wait for the NOTE 3 launching, some time this yearsamsung-galaxy-mega-handson-review-04-640x424
