Wentworth Miller, star of hit show ‘Prison Break'(2005-2009) he played the part of lead actor Michael Scofield, has come out to the public as a gay man.
According to the report first published by E! News then People.com, Wentworth came out as gay in an open letter published on GLAAD’s (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) website declining an invitation to attend the St. Petersburg International Film Festival in Russia.
Here are the excerpts from the letter published:
“Thank you for your kind invitation. As someone who has enjoyed visiting Russia in the past and can also claim a degree of Russian ancestry, it would make me happy to say yes,” Wentworth wrote. “However, as a gay man, I must decline.”
He added, “I am deeply troubled by the current attitude toward and treatment of gay men and women by the Russian government.”
“The situation is in no way acceptable, and I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and love openly.”
“Perhaps, when and if circumstances improve, I’ll be free to make a different choice.”
The letter is in light of the recent anti-gay law signed by Russian president Vladimir Putin in June. The law bans the “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations” and imposes hefty fines for providing information about the gay community to minors or holding gay prides rallies(Associated Press).
