I’ll be talking about a key element in smartphone designs today BEZEL. These days phones are crafted with nearly edge to edge displays (Bezel-less), almost everything is done on the screen Example. From Facebook to Mails etc. The obsession about Bezel-less phones is either justifiable or a bit too overrated. So if you’ve read up to this point and still have no idea what a BEZEL is I’ll define it.
WHAT IS A BEZEL
A Bezel is simply put, that area that surrounds a phone’s display. Take a look at your phone’s screen (If you haven’t done that already) you’ll notice a border that surrounds the actual screen, that’s what a BEZEL is.
So we’ve defined a Bezel lets move on.. Bezels are mostly made of plastic although these evolving days of technology anything goes, so Bezels are also made up of Metals or glass or even WOOD(yeah, that’s a weird one).
People see bezel as wasteful, lazy build quality of manufactures and even downright ugly (Coughs. errr. Tecno L3, coughs) and to an extent i concur with those views. To really think of it aside from holding the top speaker and Front camera(as the case may be) why else is the bezel still there? Why is it so large? Of what useful purpose does it serve?
For geeks and non geeks (Like me) who watch Fiction movies now and then, bezel-less devices is something we see on almost all science-Fi movies(Even though they are “Film-tricks”) so why hasn’t it really been brought to reality?. An almost all glass device is possible although we are yet to see one. Prior to the release of the Samsung galaxy S3 a year ago rumours where flying around that the device will be Bezel-less, Well that was a TOTAL LIE and till date nothing seems to have changed though it is rumoured that LG latest but yet to be release Flagship device LG G2, Pronounced (EL-GE-GE-TO) will be spotting an almost invisible bezel screen.
Yes there are arguments within the mobile circles that bezels are needed in phones. One main argument for TEAM BEZEL FANS is that bezels help protect the screen when the phone is mistakenly dropped as the case may be, but thanks to the ever innovating world of Technology a cracked screen is now likely to be a thing of the past as Major manufactures (Samsung and LG being the fore runners) are planning on debating a Flexible screen later this Year. Flexible displays will be able to absorb any impact a dropped phone might have on the screen and with the Gorilla-Glass technology improving with every release, the first ever bezel-less display might just be around the corner.
OK, you might be asking what are the advantages of a Bezel-less phone?.. Well number one Advantage is the BEAUTY. The device will be a public stunner, reducing the bezel of phones also helps to illuminate the screen.. Another advantage is a NON HEAVY(Light) phone. With manufactures trying to make their phones as light as possible, bezel-less displays will be a solid help.
BUT NOTE: no one wants to see a phone’s screen almost falling off in the name of BEZEL-LESS displays, That will be a total failure.
Rounding up things now, Bezel-less phones will be a huge plus and will also be a game changer in smart phone design but up till now no manufacture seems to have made an effort in creating one except LG with it’s yet to be released EL-GE-GE-To (LG G2) lets just hope that soon we’l be seeing the first bezel less phone 🙂
